Next stop.... Okavango Delta

So you think you've been there, done that.... and then you come here, to the Okavango Delta in Botswana. How to start?

We left Victoria Falls this morning after 2 amazing days. Flying from Vic Falls airport via Kasane in Botswana where we cleared imigration we arrived at Xigera, pronounced "Keejera". The flight took 1 hour and 30 minutes with 2 stops to drop off other passengers at other lodges. Here at Xigera we were picked up at the airstrip in our own personal Land Cruiser and driven to Xigera Safari Lodge (google or youtube it). We are gob-smacked, which is saying something after being in Sirikoi in Kenya twice before (google this place too). This is the best of the best (sounds very snobbish, but it's just the truth!). The lodge is designed with African Art in mind, with the water lilly as the centre of the theme. Absolutely beautiful !

30 minutes after arriving we are off on our first game drive.... no peace for the wicked here! Our guide, Salani asks if there's anything we really want to see so we explain that we've seen the big five in Kenya so we really want to see Hippos and Crocodiles. 15 minutes later we're watching 3 hippos, and they're not particularly happy that we've parked at the side of their waterhole! Who's watching who?!

After a drive around, looking at Red Lechwe antelope, Impala, a bull elephant, and many types of birds, and trying to find the lions without success we start to make our way back towards the lodge, when suddenly Åshild sees something ahead which she thought was a baboon, but we suddenly realised was a Leopard in the half-darkness!

Not a bad start, Hippos and a leopard +++.

A fantastic dinner this evening topped off a fantastic day. Can't wait for tomorrow, but as we will be woken at 0545 and start our morning game drive at 0620, there's not much time to wait. Good night!
