A trip around the north of Mauritius

Mauritius might only be 60 km long and 40 km wide but it takes time to get around it. We had a fantastic driver today, and chose to take the coast road in order to see as much as possible. We went to Grand Bay, where Hanna Sofie had been. We found the Banana Beach Club she'd told us about.

Next we went to the capital, Port Louis which is a nice place. Mauritius has 1,3 million inhabitants and welcomes 1 million tourists each year. Our driver told us the plan is to not expand the number of hotels so they can protect the nature and keep enough land to grow the food to feed the population.

Tourism is the main input to the economy. The growing and production of sugar and rum is number 2. The price of sugar dropped dramatically in the late 1900s so sugar production also dropped significantly with the number of sugar factories reducing from 23 to 3. Many turned to the production of rum from the sugar cane, being more lucrative. Much of the sugar production now goes to the EU.

We drove round the north coast and down the east coast on our way back to the hotel, passing many beautiful beaches, coves and villages along the way, and of course the sugar plantations that are everywhere.

Selv om øya er kun ca 60km lang og 40km bred, tar det til å komme rundt. Vi hadde en fantastisk sjåfør i dag, og valgte å kjøre kystveien for å få se og oppleve mest mulig. Vi ville opp til Grand Bay, der Hanna Sofie var. Vi fant stedene hun vandret, og det var en spesiell opplevelse.

Videre var vi i hovedstaden Port Louis, som er en fargerik by. På øya bor 1,3 millioner mennesker, og de tar i mot 1 million turister hvert år. Sjåføren fortalte at de ønsker ikke for mye hotell utvikling, da det er viktig å beskytte naturen og nødvendigheten av å produsere egen mat. Turisme er inntektskilde nummer 1, og sukker dyrking og produksjon av sukker og rom nr 2. Sukkerprisene i verden gikk betraktelig ned, derfor også utvinning av sukker. En stor del av sukkerproduksjonen går til EU, men utvinnings fabrikkene har sunket fra 23 til 3, men mange fremstiller rom i stedet, da det er mer lønnsomt.

Vi kjørte rundt den vakre kysten, som er preget av at dette er en vulkansk øy med mange flotte strender, vegetasjon og små landsbyer, og dette har vært en dag full av historie og opplevelser på øya.
